During their beautiful and harmonious conversational exchanges, Xiao Huaisu had at some point become Li You's... English teacher. Such a development was something I never saw coming, but it wasn't really a problem for me. From ever since those two had their official meeting, they had chatted regularly via WeChat, after a while, Xiao Huaisu used English in their conversations and because of this Li You's English skills (speaking wise) grew by the day. It improved so much she had even won an Excellence Award from the foreign exchange set up by her kindergarten. After he win, Xiao Huaisu even messaged me to ask how I should thank him.

Why would Xiao Huaisu show up on my doorstep at this hour?

Xiao Huaisu, without missing a beat, sat down to face Qiao Damai; and I, taking a seat beside Xiao Huaisu, replied: "Yeah—"

To which he gave a faint hum.

I thought about it seriously for a long time, and the most sincere method I could up with that wasn't a budgetary strain was to invite him over for a meal on Christmas Day. At first I was worried he might refuse my old-fashioned way of expressing my gratitude, or that he'd refuse on the grounds of having other plans for that day, but to my shock, it appeared he had no plans on this day.

I didn't respond to that guy, only scurrying back inside first to cover the pot of strewed fish and move my bowl of noodles off to the side. While I was doing this, Qiao Damai was stirring his noodles before shovelling some into his mouth. Seeing me carrying about like this, he was baffled, and so twisted back to see who came. Having seen Xiao Huaisu slowly step forward, his eyes widened in shock, and the noodles he was eating got stuck in his throat. He choked, coughing and splurting everything in his mouth, making a heaping mess with every strand after strand he brought back up.

It was Lady Li You's first luxury item, thus it must be properly protected. Even though the one who bought it for her wasn't me, but what difference is there between him buying it of me? After I successfully catch up to Xiao Huaisu and give him a position recognising his status, there'd be no distinction between either of us, so him buying something would basically just like me buying it, wouldn't it? He's her father too, you know!

It seems as though my image as a poor bastard has been long and deeply ingrained in everyone's hearts.

At Christmas, when he came over, Xiao Huaisu had gifted Li You a ball-jointed doll he bought. Apart from the doll's original clothes and shoes, there were other sets of such all placed neatly in an exquisite looking little box he also gifted Li You. At the time, I no clue it was the legendary Hermes of ball-jointed dolls[1] he had gifted, an Enchanted Doll™. I thought it was just a regular Barbie doll, but it looked far more exquisite and beautiful than a Barbie.

Hearing this, Xiao Huaisu gave a very honest response: "Li Tian borrowed money from me he hasn't paid back. I came to make him pay it."

Hearing this, I thought to myself: Based on Xiao Huaisu's nature, would he gift someone a present that was a knock-off? But I was still willing to listen to advice so I asked Qiao Damai: "Are the fakes all this impressive? Is this really that great?"

On account of my current awestruck state, I could only hear the foolish bewilderment in my voice as I replied: "Spicy stewed fish and instant noodles."

But Xiao Huaisu simply picked up his chopsticks, his tone neither slow nor rushed, as he said: "There's no rush. It'll have plenty of time to do it after we eat."

After I thought about the whole thing a little more, I felt the main issue was how Xiao Huaisu had given the gift, he did it so casually, not at all like he was offering someone a Hermes level item. In addition, I don't understand why he gave me no indication it was an Enchanted Doll. You're just planning on letting your daughter live the easy life, huh? Was this really because Li You and I gave him that potted flower? That was just done on a whim, you know! A whim!

Xiao Huaisu, without missing a beat, sat down to face Qiao Damai; and I, taking a seat beside Xiao Huaisu, replied: "Yeah—"

Taking off his gloves, he then came inside. Asking as he walked in and removed his scarf: "What are you eating? Does it taste good?" Oh that posture, so impeccably handsome, so naturally flawless.

She got bored of it really quick, just like a tornado fading to a wisp.

Afterwards, I brought the bowl of my painstakingly made stewed seafood along with the instant noodles and placed it before Xiao Huaisu. Qiao Damai had settled down by then, slowly wiping everything up. While cleaning up, he looked at me and at Xiao Huaisu, flooding me with stares brimming with doubt.

Qiao Damai had come over to hang out during the winter holiday, and so saw the doll Li You had left on the sofa when he had. Picking it up, he looked at in disbelief saying: "Is this an imitation? It's a seriously good fake too. It's good enough that you might confuse it with the real thing."

Pounding on his chest, he wheezed: "P-Professor Xiao?"

Qiao Damai replied confidently: "That's right. My cousin saved up a couple years worth of her New Years lucky money just to buy a bare doll form, don't even mention the accessories. Dolls like those are luxury items, you know?" After saying this, he picked up Li You's doll, inspecting it carefully as if he was an expert, then added: "But this knock-off you have should be worth a few hundred at least."

From inside, Qiao Damai yelled out: "Li Tian, who is it? It's not my dad, right?! If it's my dad, don't let him in!"

Qiao Damai looked at me in shock, asking: "You actually borrowed money from the professor and even had him come here?!" Printed in his eyes were the words: 'Big brother, you are freaking awesome!' And after this he spoke up on my behalf, telling Xiao Huaisu: "It must've been because he had forgotten. It's not because he was trying to avoid paying you back!"

Anyway, when Qiao Damai was almost done, I made a video and posted it to my WeChat friend circle along with the message: A certain someone painstakingly made spicy Sichuan fish for yours truly~

Hearing this, Xiao Huaisu gave a very honest response: "Li Tian borrowed money from me he hasn't paid back. I came to make him pay it."

Following a brief moment of hesitation, he then asked: "Professor, you...? The rest of his sentence, 'Why did you come here?' held back for a long time as he did not dare ask. Not only was he confused by Xiao Huaisu's presence, I was confused as well.

Is this what's known as: real diamonds in the hands of a poor person will be seen as others as fake; but fakes in the hand of a rich person would make others believe their real?

Opening the door, I the person I saw was actually... Xiao Huaisu.

The "Hermes" of ball-jointed dolls (bjd) is a brand created by the artist, Marina Bychkova, known as Enchanted Doll™. They are handmade and expensive as heck. The cheaper resin versions start at $2000 USD I believe, note they are unpainted and naked. While the more expensive handmade porcelain versions range from the thousands to the hundreds of thousands (with full accessories). This artist is the one who designed a doll on the actor Li Chen's behalf that bore his then partner, Fan Bingbing's, likeness for the small price of $300,000 USD or ¥2,000,000. So with the accessories on the doll and the extra case with more Xiao Huaisu bought Li You, that doll can be used as collateral! Don't waste money on diamonds, buy one of these instead;) Example of the doll in the pic, link to the Enchanted Doll™ site here.[]iana: Looks like someone is marking their territory.

Qiao Damai ran to the balcony to answer the call for a minute before again coming back, stalling for a long time, before he then asked Xiao Huaisu: "My friend wants to come over, would it be inconvenient if they did?"

Anyhow, despite the bitterness within this darling heart of mine, I still managed to swiftly but carefully grab Li You's Christmas present and respectfully returned it to the cabinet in her bedroom. Treating it as if it were a Buddha statue.

Later that night, the two of us made do with cooking two bowls of instant noodles. Qiao Damai felt I was very generous, so while I was boiling the water, he again making the spicy stewed fish I've been hankering for since a long time now. I had already rushed over to the supermarket to get the ingredients an hour before knowing Qiao Damai would show up. It really does seem as though opportunities are reserved for those who plan ahead. I guess I'm just a clever boy, ain't I?

Now circling back to Qiao Damai, the reason that guy was here to begin with was due to his family forcing him to go on a blind date. Unable to stand the thought of it, he had high-tailed it over here to my place. After dumping his grievance on me, I could sympathise with his pain. And as luck would have it, Li You would be spending the next couple days at her grandparents, so I invited him to stay over to which her gladly agreed.

Following the receiving of X amount of likes as well as X amount of envious comments, satisfied, I tucked my phone away in hopes to begin gorging myself along with Qiao Damai. But no more than two minutes into our eating, my doorbell rang.

Me: "???" Isn't the owner of this house me?

I really disliked being disturbed when I ate, so I couldn't understand exactly who would come here at this time. Eating a few more bites as Qiao Damai and I both tried to push the other into answering it, ultimately, we ended up playing rock paper scissors to decide the loser. I lost, thus after stewing in my crippling defeat for a while, I dragged myself to the door wondering if I had ordered anything in the last couple of days as I took my sweet time getting there.

A whim!

At Christmas, when he came over, Xiao Huaisu had gifted Li You a ball-jointed doll he bought. Apart from the doll's original clothes and shoes, there were other sets of such all placed neatly in an exquisite looking little box he also gifted Li You. At the time, I no clue it was the legendary Hermes of ball-jointed dolls he had gifted, an Enchanted Doll™. I thought it was just a regular Barbie doll, but it looked far more exquisite and beautiful than a Barbie.

From the get go, Li You loved this gift Xiao Huaisu chose for her, which made me rather relieved, relieved she had finally taken up a little girl's hobby. From the start, she played dress up games to the point where I even hopped on WeChat to discuss with Xiao Huaisu whether a little girl's like for playing dress up was in their nature, never expecting that the time where she'd get bored and toss it aside wasn't so far ahead.

Following a brief moment of hesitation, he then asked: "Professor, you...? The rest of his sentence, 'Why did you come here?' held back for a long time as he did not dare ask. Not only was he confused by Xiao Huaisu's presence, I was confused as well.

It seems as though my image as a poor bastard has been long and deeply ingrained in everyone's hearts.

Xiao Huaisu nodded as he replied: "Not at all."

Hearing this, Xiao Huaisu gave a very honest response: "Li Tian borrowed money from me he hasn't paid back. I came to make him pay it."

She got bored of it really quick, just like a tornado fading to a wisp.

It seems as though my image as a poor bastard has been long and deeply ingrained in everyone's hearts.

Hearing this, I thought to myself: Based on Xiao Huaisu's nature, would he gift someone a present that was a knock-off? But I was still willing to listen to advice so I asked Qiao Damai: "Are the fakes all this impressive? Is this really that great?"

She got bored of it really quick, just like a tornado fading to a wisp.

And just as I put back my phone, Qiao Damai to the contrary picked up his, saying to us: "I'm sorry. but a friend of mine is calling."

To which he gave a faint hum.

At this time I remembered that back when I returned his clothes, Xiao Huaisu had extorted a meal from me, and he had paid for it expecting to be paid back, but I never gave it back to him. Although this happened a while ago, I never thought he'd skip using something like WeChat to remind me to instead come all the way here to get it back. This made it clear he was too impatient to wait, so I aid hurriedly: "I'll go transfer it to you in a second!" pulling out my phone to do so.

Following a brief moment of hesitation, he then asked: "Professor, you...? The rest of his sentence, 'Why did you come here?' held back for a long time as he did not dare ask. Not only was he confused by Xiao Huaisu's presence, I was confused as well.

Isn't the owner of this house me?

But Xiao Huaisu simply picked up his chopsticks, his tone neither slow nor rushed, as he said: "There's no rush. It'll have plenty of time to do it after we eat."

Looking down, he caught sight of Qiao Damai's shoes, seeming to be deep in thought before asking: "Do you have a guest?"

It seems as though my image as a poor bastard has been long and deeply ingrained in everyone's hearts.

My senses were quickly regained, and I moved to take out a pair of slippers to give him while replying: "Guest, what guest? It's just Qiao Damai!"

Qiao Damai agreed with this too, saying: "Yeah yeah yeah, you can pay it back after eating."

Pounding on his chest, he wheezed: "P-Professor Xiao?"

I put back my phone as a result.

And just as I put back my phone, Qiao Damai to the contrary picked up his, saying to us: "I'm sorry. but a friend of mine is calling."

Is this what's known as: real diamonds in the hands of a poor person will be seen as others as fake; but fakes in the hand of a rich person would make others believe their real?

Qiao Damai ran to the balcony to answer the call for a minute before again coming back, stalling for a long time, before he then asked Xiao Huaisu: "My friend wants to come over, would it be inconvenient if they did?"

Xiao Huaisu nodded as he replied: "Not at all."

Xiao Huaisu nodded as he replied: "Not at all."

Taking off his gloves, he then came inside. Asking as he walked in and removed his scarf: "What are you eating? Does it taste good?" Oh that posture, so impeccably handsome, so naturally flawless.

Xiao Huaisu nodded as he replied: "Not at all."

Xiao Huaisu, without missing a beat, sat down to face Qiao Damai; and I, taking a seat beside Xiao Huaisu, replied: "Yeah—"

Notes:

^1. Don't waste money on diamonds, buy one of these instead;) Example of the doll in the pic, link to the Enchanted Doll™ site here.

iana: Looks like someone is marking their territory.
